What behavior technician jobs in Richmond are like

Every day looks different, because every home is different. One session is snack time and bubbles with a two-year-old in Mechanicsville. The next is a handwashing routine and homework practice with a seven-year-old in the West End.

RBTs practise under the close supervision of a BCBA, as the BACB requires. You'll see your BCBA regularly in sessions, not only on paper.

How to become a registered behavior technician in Virginia

The RBT credential is issued by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB), not by the state. The BACB sets the training, competency assessment and exam steps, and its requirements changed in 2026, so check bacb.com/rbt for the current rules. If you're new to ABA, tell us on the form. We can explain the steps.

A day in an in-home RBT job

TimeWhat you do
MorningA session with a preschooler before lunch: play-based teaching, snack-time requests, a handwashing routine
MiddayWrite session notes and data on the tablet, review the next child's behavior intervention plan
After schoolA session with a school-age child: homework routine, turn-taking with a sibling, calm-down practice
WeeklySupervision with your BCBA, sometimes during a session, to learn new ABA techniques and review progress

Every child has an individualized treatment plan written by a BCBA. Your job is to follow it carefully, collect good data and tell the BCBA what you see. Experience working with children helps a lot: daycare, teaching, coaching, camps or babysitting all count.

What we look for in behavior technicians

  • Warmth and patience with children who are having a hard day
  • Reliability: families plan their week around your sessions
  • Good notes and attention to detail
  • Comfort working in family homes, with parents nearby
  • Interest in the field of applied behavior analysis and behavioral health
  • Part time or full time availability; tell us what you want

We talk about pay, mileage and schedule openly on the first call. Ask us anything.

RBT vs behavior technician (BT): what's the difference?

A behavior technician (BT) is anyone working one-on-one with children under a BCBA's direction. A registered behavior technician (RBT) is a BT who has earned the RBT credential from the BACB. Many ABA jobs list "RBT certification is strongly preferred" because some insurance plans require it for the sessions they pay for. If you're a BT now, earning the RBT is the usual next step.

RBT jobs pay and salary in Richmond, VA

Pay for RBT jobs in Richmond depends on certification, experience, the hours you want, and how much driving the caseload involves. Job sites list ranges for behavioral technician positions in Richmond, but a range doesn't tell you how many hours you'll really get. Ask any employer, including us, how many billable hours a week they can give you near your home, how drive time is paid, and what happens when a family cancels.
